THE NEAR EAST COLLEGE

The N.E.C was founded in the 1993 Academic year and is located within the campus area of The Near East University in Lefkoşa - the capital city of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The N.E.C, the first private college giving full time education, is already fourteen years old.

CURRICULUM

The N.E.C has, in a relatively short period of  time, acquired a significant place in the educational field of the country, applying  the same programme as stipulated by the Ministry of Education and Culture for secondary schools. Except for the cultural subjects, the medium of instruction is English. GCE 'O'level subjects are taken in years nine and ten, as in the state colleges, and the success of students in the specified subjects is measured independently.

While the lessons required by the Ministry are taken in the morning, extra curricular activities, sports, IGCSE, KET, PET, IELTS, TOEFL, SAT I-II, ÖSS, GCE and "Maarif" Certificate courses  and remedial courses are taken in the afternoons and on Saturday mornings.

According to changes made by the Ministry of Education for the 2005-2006 Academic Year, students starting High school will complete High school in four years.

EVALUATING STUDENT SUCCESS

Every subject is evaluated on a scale of ten (10)  within the framework of the circulars of the Ministry. An academic year consists of 2 semesters. In each semester students are required to enter a mid-term and a final exam. In each semester, besides the examination marks, homework and project marks are also taken into consideration. In fixing the semester grade, the mid-term grade is multiplied by 2, the final is multiplied by 3 and the homework/or project mark is multiplied by one and the sum is divided by 6. At the end of the academic year the final grade of the student is obtained by taking the mathematical average of  2 semesters. As a result students obtaining 5 out of 10 are deemed to be successful.

The annual average of the students and their placement within the class is determined by calculating the accepted weight of each subjects.

The aim of The N.E.C at the secondary level is to place education on a strong foundation and to provide English education at a high level, to prepare the students for various universities according to their needs, ability and success.

ENTRANCE EXAM

Admission to the first year  is in compliance with the conditions  set out by the Ministry. Students are required to take a 100 -question test consisting of 40 Maths, 40 Turkish and 20 English questions. As a result of this exam, students are given scholarships according to their level of success.
